Elgar’s The Light of Life, St John’s Worcester, 9 April

An Easter Concert at St John’s in Bedwardine, Worcester

Saturday 9 April at 7.30pm

To Elgar devotees, The Light of Life is an early masterpiece, full of magnificent tunes and swelling emotion, as powerful in its way as the more well known oratorios and symphonic works. Yet, inexplicably, the modestly proportioned oratorio remains a rarity.
Parry’s sublime Songs of Farewell offer moving testimony to the passing of time, and the chill wind of a new century on the brink of change. Foreshadowing so much of the Elgarian twilight familiar from the symphonies and concertos, Parry’s unaccompanied part songs are jewell-like settings of mystical and metaphysical poetry from an earlier age.
Soloists include:
Harriet Campbell (soprano)
Sue Scot (alto)
James Manship (tenor)
Ian Bell (bass)
Organist Charmian Manship
